Islands of the World IX Conference
"Sustainable Islands - Sustainable Strategies"
International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA)
Hosted by University of Hawaii & Maui Community College
Kahului, Maui, HI, USA
In 1986, the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA), made up of scholars, researchers, and island enthusiasts from around the world, organized an international conference on Vancouver Island, Canada, to discuss issues related to small islands.  This inaugural "Islands of the World" conference was so successful that it was followed by others in Tasmania (1988), the Bahamas (1992), Okinawa (1994), Mauritius (1998), Isle of Skye (2000), Prince Edward Island (2002), and Taiwan, 2004. The three interconnected themes planned for the 2006 conference tie in with sustainability efforts currently underway on Maui: economy (po`okela), ecology (malama `aina), and social equity (ho`ohanohano). Scholars and experts from around the world will make presentations, lead discussions, and interact with international colleagues on the issues of co-responsibility and strategies for sustainable island development.

International Dialogue on Science and Practice in Sustainable Development: Linking Knowledge with Action
23 - 27 January 2007
Initiative of Science and Technology for Sustainability (ISTS) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), in co-operation with the Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI); the Unit of Social and Environmental Research (USER), Chiang Mai University
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Contact: Jill Jaeger, IDSP Executive Director at jill.jaeger@seri.at
The IDSP aims to foster effective collaborations between scientists and practitioners to advance the practice of sustainable development, through knowledge sharing and promoting national, regional, and international actions and implementation. It will do so by featuring practical examples of successful collaborations, critical analyses of what has not worked and a mixture of invited plenary dialogues, parallel sessions and poster sessions to compare and consider experiences from around the world. Some 300 participants from developing and developed countries worldwide are expected to engage in dialogues on how to best link knowledge with actions to achieve sustainable development, including policy makers, professionals and practitioners from the global communities of science and research, governments, business and industry, NGOs and think tanks, education and training institutions, national and international media, and private and public funding organizations. The expected outcome of the Dialogue is a comprehensive, timetabled, and agreed International Action Plan to strengthen existing sustainable development networks of collaboration between science and practice and create new alliances. The IDSP International Planning Committee is now making an open call for proposals for special (parallel) sessions and poster sessions. The Calls for Sessions and Posters and details about submission of proposals are available at www.sustdialogue.org, or click here for a PDF.

Twenty-First Pacific Science Congress
12 - 19 June 2007
Pacific Science Association, University of the Ryukyus, and Science Council of Asia
Okinawa Convention Center
Naha, Okinawa, Japan
Contact: Makoto Tsuchiya at tsuchya@sci.u-ryukyu.ac.jp
The 21st Pacific Science Congress provides an interdisciplinary platform for scientists from the region to discuss and review common concerns and priorities; brings together scientists from more remote states; and serves as a catalyst for scientific and scholarly collaboration and to announce and establish new research initiatives. The PSA focuses on those countries bordering the Pacific Ocean and the islands of the Pacific basin. This Congress will be held in conjunction with the Science Council of Asia. Such joint meetings will allow scientists working in the Asia-Pacific to share information on scientific research, training, funding and future directions. It will provide the opportunity for interchange and networking and building collaborations as a foundation for future socially responsible science particularly as it is relevant for addressing various issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Policy-relevant issues related to Sustainability Science, Biodiversity, Climate Change, the Marine Environment, Water, Globalization, Gender in Science and Technology, and Tsunamis and Natural Hazards will be addressed at the 2007 meeting. The PSC Organizing Committee is now making an open call for additional symposia and sessions at the Congress, and individual scientists and scientific societies are encouraged to contact the Local Organizing Committee if they are interested in doing so. Please check both the PSA and Pacific Science Congress websites for updates on this important regional meeting. The Local Organizing Committee and the Executive Committee members of the PSA are looking forward to meeting with all of you in Okinawa in June 2007 and addressing issues critical to the future of the Pacific.
